Roulette was derived from a french word which means "small wheel". In the late 18th century, Roulette became very popular when Prince Charles of Monaco introduced gambling to Monaco as a way of alleviating the financial problems of the region. Then in 1842 two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc add a 0 to the numbers of the roulette wheel. There are now 37 numbers on the roulette, ranging from 0 to 36. Adding the 0 increases the house odds of winning.
There are two betting areas on a Roulette table, the inside and outside betting areas. The inside area is the individually numbered area of black and red squares. The outside area is made up of boxes to bet on the columns, red/black, odd/even and segmented number groups of the inside area. The 0 of the European wheel is at the top of the columns.
Each player at the Roulette wheel has different coloured chips to avoid confusion between each player's bet. There's also a minimum and maximum bet at every Roulette table, however you can't combine your inside and outside bets to meet the table's minimum.
There are six kinds of inside bets which can be placed: straight up, split, street (or line), corner (or quad), basket and double street. A straight up bet is placed on a single number. The remaining five types of inside bets are placed on various number combinations by straddling the lines of different numbers with your chips. Outside bets are quite self explanatory: red/black, odd/even, dozen bets (or one third of the 36 Roulette numbers) and column. All bets pay out at varying odds. |
